Community Preparedness

Local municiaplaites lead emergnecy planning and response in Sarnia-Lambton. They manage public safety efforts, issue evacuation and shelter-in-place advisories, and provide current information about local emergencies. Residents are encouraged to visit their municipality’s official website and follow their communications channels for the most accurate and up-to-date guidance.

Some of the key initiatives led or supported by BASES include:

  • Sarnia-Lambton Alerts: A Free, regional public alerting system, powered by Everbridge Inc., used by Sarnia-Lambton municipalities to send emergency alerts and other important community notices to subscribers. Sarnia-Lambton Alerts also includes emergency and non-emergency notifications from BASES industrial members.
  • Industry Hotline: Call 226-778-4611 to hear voice recordings of active industrial notifications issued through Sarnia-Lambton Alerts. This hotline provides up-to-date information about industrial activity affecting the region.
  • Community Emergency Sirens: Twelve solar-powered sirens across Sarnia, Point Edward, and Aamjiwnaang, First Nation alert the public to hazardous situations. Located near parks and schools, the sirens are tested every Monday at 12:30 p.m. for 30 seconds. The Sarnia Police Service is responsible for activating the sirens in the event of an emergency. When triggered, the sirens sound at full volume for 9 minutes to alert the public to take immediate action. If you hear the sirens, emergency officials recommend that you shelter-in-place and await further instruction from your local municipality through Sarnia-Lambton Alerts, municipal social channels, and local media.
  • Traffic Control Boxes: BASES maintains emergency barricade boxes located throughout Sarnia and St. Clair Township. Each box contains road closure signs, traffic cones, lights, and other safety equipment that police can use to quickly close roads during an emergency to help maintain public safety.
  • Annual Emergency Response Simulation Exercise: This yearly coordinated drill brings together municipal and industrial partners to test emergency plans, equipment, and personnel in a safe, controlled environment. It helps identify improvement areas and ensures effective communication systems are in place to alert workers and the community during an emergency.
  • E2 Regulations: BASES has supported regional alignment and regulatory clarity around compliance with the Environmental Emergency Regulations, 2019. These regulations require facilities to develop and test emergency plans and inform the public about potential risks, impacts, and protective actions before, during, and after an environmental emergency.
  • Community Engagement and Education: BASES actively engages with neighbours, employees, contractors, and community partners to raise awareness of hazards and how risks are managed. This includes public outreach, informational materials, and support for regional emergency preparedness campaigns.
